So I have to give a 2-3 minute speech tomorrow in my communications class and I have to pretty much talk about myself. They gave us a list of questions and the most obvious one for me was to talk about my cultural background, so I decide to write out my thoughts and see what I get from that.
I come from such a different background than most of the people around me these days. I grew up in Venezuela, where not only do we speak a different language, but it's pretty much a different reality. Most of all with people. Here, people tend to want to keep their distance and live in their own world and that was a real change for me because people back home tend to be much warmer. So at first it's hard to adapt to an enviroment where the boundaries are so much tighter and you learn to adapt and that changes you. When I go back to Venezuela to visit sometimes I feel out of place because I've changed and I've put boundaries around myself as well, but here I'm more open than a lot of people. I think I'm still trying to find my middle between adapting to a new city, a new country while trying not to forget my roots because I'm something I'm proud of and it's a big part of who I am.
